Operable Partition Walls vs Movable Glass Walls: The 2026 Buyer's Guide

Compare operable partition walls and movable glass walls — acoustic ratings (STC/Rw), max heights, finishes, motorization, and how to choose the right system for hotels, offices, and ballrooms.

What is an operable partition wall?

An operable partition wall (also called a movable or operable wall) is a top-hung, track-mounted panel system that creates a temporary solid divide between rooms. NEUWALL operable partitions run on an aluminium head track with no floor track required, and panels seal acoustically at the top and bottom when closed. They are used in ballrooms, conference centres, hotels, and offices to reconfigure one large space into several smaller ones.

What is a movable glass wall?

A movable glass wall is a glazed, top-hung partition built from tempered glass panels on the NG-80 aluminium track. NEUWALL's manual glass walls use 8 mm tempered glass in a black or white coated frame with a 60 mm painted border; the fully motorized version adds automatic panel travel and a telescopic closure. Glass walls keep sightlines and daylight open while still dividing a space.

How tall can operable partition walls go?

NEUWALL's standard operable partitions reach 19 ft 8 in (6 000 mm); single-panel models reach 13 ft 1 in (4 000 mm). For atriums, convention halls and multi-storey voids, the Tall Opening system goes up to 59 ft (18 000 mm) with a steel-framed panel on a heavy-duty rail.

Are NEUWALL operable walls soundproof?

No wall is 100% soundproof, but NEUWALL solid operable walls are laboratory-rated up to STC 55 dB (ASTM E90) — equivalently Rw 50–55 dB (ISO 717-1) depending on the facing/construction variant. Glass walls are rated Rw 44 dB (ISO 717-1). Always quote the correct standard: STC for the US market, Rw (ISO 717-1) for international projects.

What is the difference between STC and Rw?

Both measure sound isolation, but under different standards. STC (Sound Transmission Class) follows ASTM E90 / E413 and is the US specification. Rw follows ISO 717-1 and is used internationally. They are not interchangeable and should not be converted; NEUWALL reports both where tested.

Which system is used for hotels and ballrooms?

For hotels, ballrooms and conference centres that reconfigure daily, NEUWALL recommends the NW840-W motorized operable wall (semi- or fully-automatic seal activation, steel-framed, 92 mm thick) or the Tall Opening system for high spaces. Fully motorized glass walls are popular for boardrooms and restaurant divides.

What finishes are available?

Solid operable panels accept HPL, vinyl, fabric, magnetic, and writable (whiteboard) facings. Fire performance by material: HPL to BS 476 Class 1, vinyl to ASTM E84 Class A, MDF substrate to EN 13501-1 B-s1,d0.

What is the lead time and how are they shipped?

Typical manufacturing lead time is about 30 days after order confirmation and deposit; sea freight to the destination port commonly adds about 25 days, for an order-to-arrival window near 55 days (excluding customs clearance and on-site installation). NEUWALL is an export manufacturer shipping worldwide, including the United States and the UAE.

How durable are they?

NEUWALL panels are tested to 40 000 open/close cycles (SGS) and backed by a 2-year hardware and 5-year structural warranty.
